The Yeast You Cannot See

6 “Be careful,” Jesus said to them. “Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”
7 They discussed this among themselves and said, “It is because we didn’t bring any bread.”
8 Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked, “You of little faith, why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread? 9 Do you still not understand? Don’t you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered? 10 Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered? 11 How is it you don’t understand that I was not talking to you about bread? But be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” 12 Then they understood that he was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

Yeast is invisible, but its influence is undeniable. Jesus warned His disciples not about what was missing from their hands, but about what could quietly corrupt their hearts. The yeast of the Pharisees is the belief that religious performance earns God's favor. The yeast of Herod is the belief that human power and control secure your future. Both are subtle. Both spread. Neither announces itself. They simply work until the whole is affected. The invitation today is to examine what invisible assumptions are shaping your spiritual life. Is your faith rooted in what you do, or in who Jesus is?

Reflection Question: In what areas of your life are you trusting religious habit or personal control more than you are trusting Jesus?

​Practical Application: Spend five minutes in silence, asking the Holy Spirit to reveal any area of your heart that has drifted toward self-reliance.

La Levadura Que No Puedes Ver

6 —Tengan cuidado—les advirtió Jesús—; eviten la levadura de los fariseos y de los saduceos.
7 Ellos comentaban entre sí: «Lo dice porque no trajimos pan.» 8 Al darse cuenta de esto, Jesús les recriminó:

La levadura es invisible, pero su influencia es innegable. Jesús no advirtió a sus discípulos sobre lo que faltaba en sus manos, sino sobre lo que podía corromper silenciosamente sus corazones. La levadura de los fariseos es la creencia de que el desempeño religioso gana el favor de Dios. La levadura de Herodes es la creencia de que el poder y el control humanos aseguran tu futuro. Ambas son sutiles. Ambas se extienden. Ninguna se anuncia a sí misma. Simplemente trabajan hasta que todo queda afectado. La invitación de hoy es a examinar qué suposiciones invisibles están dando forma a tu vida espiritual. ¿Está tu fe arraigada en lo que haces o en quién es Jesús?
