When Your Problem Becomes Your Focus

14 The disciples had forgotten to bring bread, except for one loaf they had with them in the boat. 15 “Be careful,” Jesus warned them. “Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and that of Herod.”
16 They discussed this with one another and said, “It is because we have no bread.”
17 Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked them: “Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Are your hearts hardened?

The New International Version (Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan, 2011), Mk 8:14–17.

The disciples had one loaf of bread and a boat full of anxiety. Jesus was speaking about something eternal, but they were consumed by something temporary. It is a deeply human tendency to let an immediate need drown out a divine word. The problem was not the missing bread. The problem was the misplaced focus. When we fix our eyes entirely on what we lack, we become deaf to what God is saying. Today, take inventory of what is consuming your mental and emotional energy. Ask honestly whether your problem has become louder than your God. He is still speaking.

Reflection Question: What present concern is competing with your ability to hear from God today?

Practical Application: Write down your current worry. Beneath it, write one truth about God's character that directly addresses it.

International Bible Society, Nueva Versión Internacional (East Brunswick, NJ: Sociedad Bı́blica Internacional, 1979), Mk 8:14–17.
