Following a lifetime journey of transformation
Why one god?
Over the centuries human beings have been captivated with the idea of a supreme creator. We see the evidence of this as we study ancient cultures. Most of them believed that someone bigger, mightier, and powerful, created and sustained all things. Some have several gods, one for each part of nature; wind, fire, rain, etc…
The existence of a god is well received by most of people, there comes a point where nature itself screams about a supreme creator, mighty mountains, beautiful sunsets, and what about the beauty of the stars and the magnificence of the universe that we have not been able to admire in its totality with our limited technology. So the question is not if we can believe that there must be a god, the real question is who is that god? And in an attempt to answer this question, all kinds of beliefs are circulating our world today, many claim to have the truth, but who has it? It is necessary to look not only to the faith that these different religions hold, but also to the evidence to back up their beliefs. It is when we acknowledge and compare the evidences that we have that we find something peculiar about Christianity.
Christianity not only claims to have the truth, but it also has the greatest amount of evidence to sustain such claims. The way the Bible is written (God’s revelation for those who believe in Christ) is remarkable. Written in a period of 1,500 years by more than 40 authors whom in most cases were not acquainted with the others, and yet no contradiction in any basic doctrine found is something that no other religion can claim about their belief. The bible has a lot of evidence to proof that it is a reliable document; thousands of locations mentioned in the bible have been found, and historical events contained in it are confirmed by secular history, these have never been refuted by any other discovery found. The OT includes stories since the beginning about God creating earth and men. It describes the fall, the redemption and the story of a people, a chosen generation that would be restored from their fallen condition and reunited with their creator. And why believe in one God?
There are many reasons, but I will give only three basic reasons.
1) Because of the amount of evidence to proof that the bible is historically reliable, we can trust that what it says is true. And it clearly contains not only God’s works, but also His attributes, and His plans for humanity. In the bible God not only describes Himself, but also has a constant interaction with a people, and whenever they would follow His commands, they were blessed. Idolatry separated God from His people; this clearly speaks of one God, a jealous God (Ex.20:3 “You shall have no other gods before me.”).
2) Then came Jesus, who claimed to be the Son of God, the promised messiah. Dozens of prophecies were fulfilled in Christ, giving Christianity another peculiarity among other religions. Since the bible is reliable, we can trust that Jesus is who he said He was, God in flesh. Jesus not only fulfilled dozens of prophecies, but also made powerful statements about who He was, and promised that the Father would send His Spirit after His crucifixion. Many claim that Jesus was a great teacher, or a great prophet, but that would make Him either a liar or a lunatic since He claimed to be God. He said that no one would go to the Father except through Him; One God (John 14:6 “Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”)
3) And lastly, there is evidence that the Holy Spirit came upon those who waited for the promise as Jesus told them in Acts 1:4. Right after this, thousands came to the knowledge of Christ, if that would have been a myth, it would have been discredited immediately but instead, Christianity expanded quickly and even today the Bible is the book that has been printed/downloaded the most in history.
Since the bible is reliable, Jesus is reliable; there is only one true god, God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
